Russia deploys 10,000 red-cockaded woodpeckers to Ukrainian border

KYIV — In a blatant escalation of tensions in Eastern Europe, Russia has deployed nearly 10,000 red-cockaded woodpeckers to the Ukrainian border to keep U.S. troops at bay, according to intelligence sources.

“We knew Putin liked to fight dirty, but we didn’t think he’d sink this low,” said Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. “Unfortunately, the red-cockaded woodpecker-rich environment along the Ukrainian border leaves our troops no option but to withdraw and hope we didn’t upset their vulnerable nesting habitats.”

The red-cockaded woodpecker, or R-CWp as it is referred to by Department of Defense personnel, is endemic to the southeastern United States and has been aggressively reclaiming territory within training areas on military bases there for decades. Its influence is such that all combat orders must include an addendum stating specifically how commanders will protect the old-growth coniferous forests that the birds prefer.
